ICAEW

We have been at the heart of the accountancy profession since it began in 1880, when a Royal Charter established The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).

We believe in a world of strong economies. This means we work with all our stakeholders to develop strong, accountable and open economies where people can trust data, leaders can make good decisions, public finances are transparent and businesses are accountable.

Collectively, we empower businesses to succeed. We encourage individuals and organisations to perform better. We collaborate with governments, regulators and business leaders to think through the difficult questions and help them get to the heart of the real issues.

We cultivate excellence by providing training, guidance and support. We ensure that our community is ready to face the fast-paced changes of the global economy.

ICAEW Chartered Accountants – all 147,000 of them − are a force for positive change. As their institute, we speak for the profession, uphold standards and campaign for progress in a volatile world.

Here are some of the ways that we work to achieve our goals.

 1) Agile Institute

As an organisation, we act swiftly and decisively in an increasingly fast-moving environment. We also ensure that the profession can respond efficiently and effectively to change while relentlessly upholding the quality, integrity and ethical behaviour of the profession.

 2) Connected communities

We bring together a unique network of talented and diverse professionals whose initiative and integrity help economies thrive.

 3) Future professional

We cultivate excellence by providing training, guidance and support.

We make hundreds of visits to schools and universities, including careers fairs, presentations and networking sessions, to tell them about chartered accountancy as a career.

We run commercial awareness sessions and business games throughout the year in the Middle East, Africa, South East Asia and Europe.

We are a partner of Access Accountancy, an initiative dedicated to improving access to the accountancy profession by offering work experience placements to pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds.

In the UAE we run the ICAEW Emiratisation Scholarship Scheme which supports the nation’s goals of both encouraging nationals to work in the private rather than public sector and of having 100 Emirati audit professionals by 2020. We also run scholarship schemes in Kenya and India.

ICAEW played a leading role in producing the world’s first Common Best Practice Code for High Quality Internships with the UK Government and professions (updated in 2013) which suggests that interns should be fairly recruited, given meaningful work and paid. We endorse this and pay our interns a living wage.

ICAEW uses its expertise to help and develop other professional bodies worldwide, making them sustainable for the long term and able to grow and evolve independently.

Our three public-listed companies—Sunway Berhad, Sunway Construction, and Sunway REIT, with a combined market capitalisation of RM 15 billion—form a real-estate value chain that exemplifies socially responsible business practices, evidenced by their listing on the FTSE4Good Bursa Malaysia Index.

At Sunway, we are committed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), and continue to align our business strategies to meet the needs of our communities in line with the SDG agenda. The Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development, established at Sunway University in 2016, serves as a hub for the education and advancement of sustainability across Southeast Asia. The Center is the first of its kind in Asia. Through the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, we provide disadvantaged and deserving young adults access to quality education by disbursing scholarships exceeding RM330 million as of 2017.
